Artists Bio
Sheena Fowkes is a contemporary artist based in Derbyshire, working primarily with oil paint to explore the materiality of colour, texture and memory. Her practice is rooted in a strong sense of place and family, with landscape and environment shaping both her subject matter and approach.
Through layered surfaces and expressive use of oil paint, Sheena creates works that hold emotional depth and atmosphere. Colour functions as both material and narrative, carrying personal histories, inherited techniques, and echoes of childhood. Family remains a central influence, informing her process and her interest in preserving memory through paint.
Sheena has exhibited at Patchings Art Centre in Nottingham, The Old Lock Up Gallery in Cromford , Derbyshire and the Cuppola Gallery in Sheffield. Recently she has been extra long listed for the Jacksons Art Prize and has received funding through the Enterprise Enhancement Scheme at the Open College of the Arts, supporting the ongoing development of her artistic practice. Her work Invites viewers to reflect on their connections to place, identity, and belonging, using colour as a means of storytelling and emotional connection.
